Like the Chelsea, the York Buildings Company initially acquired tenants quickly, with twenty-seven hundred in 1691.6 It did not, however, enjoy the same constant growth that the other company displayed over the long run and had a number of false starts (for its attempts with steam engines, see chapters 3 and 4). After 1800, it had about two thousand customers.7 Its water assets were taken over by the New River in 1818.
